“Since everything I paint comes from what I have seen, the location I paint in is directly reflected in the work. However, I cannot paint topographical paintings. I have to know the place and its history and its customs. It has sometimes taken me years to paint something I see every day. I want the painting to have a resonance that has as much to do with time as it has to do with appearance.”
