"I want to use the ingredients of landscape in a simpler way. I have learned how to make my imagery carry a multitude of feelings and perceptions, at once more complex in their subject-matter and more simple in their execution. I find that I can say ‘this is a landscape which is also a square metre of my garden’, and despite the fact that I may have painted a pool, a potted plant or a line of trees, the real subject of the painting is an emotional state of mind - longing, the memory of another place, the intense isolation of the studio”.
